The Black Spiderman is Here and he's Perfect

This is Nikolas A. Draper-Ivey. He’s a 22-year-old comic-book artist from Lansing, Michigan, and his version of Spider-Man just went viral.

In case you don’t recognize the costume, Draper-Ivey is dressed up as a newer version of Spider-Man. In 2011, Marvel gave the mantel of Spider-Man to half-black, half-Hispanic teenager Miles Morales.

The character’s been a huge hit, and just this week it was announced that Donald Glover would be voicing an animated version on Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors.

Glover playing Miles Morales is a big deal. In 2010, the internet started the “Donald for Spider-Man” campaign to try to get Glover the main part in Sony’s then upcoming Spider-Man movie.

Draper-Ivey said he started following the Miles Morales Spider-Man after friends told him he looked a lot like the character. This is his first full cosplay.

“Miles Morales seemed like the most appropriate one to do,” Draper-Ivey told BuzzFeed. “As I followed this character, being able to relate to him in a very real way brought this to life for me.”

Draper-Ivey thinks Peter Parker and Miles Morales are really similar, great characters. He said that both Peter Parker and Miles Morales try to be heroes even though they aren’t perfect.

When he started putting photos online, Draper-Ivey got a lot of attention, including from Sara Pichelli, the designer and co-creator of Miles Morales’ Spider-Man. “You’re perfect,” Pichelli wrote.

Hard to argue with him, to be honest…

“I want to see Miles on the big screen,” Draper-Ivey said. “Even if I have to put on this suit and get up there with Andrew Garfield myself.”

NBA 2K15 New trailer Featuring Shaq & Ernie

The trailer above not only shows off some awesome footage for the upcoming NBA 2K15 video game, it also shows Inside the NBA on TNT co-hosts Shaquille O'Neal and Ernie Johnson briefly delivering their take on the virtual action.

The trailer above is officially known as Yakkem. You'll find out why as you watch and listen to Shaq deliver his "isms" in the video.
If you weren't aware, the song playing in the background is "Suck My Kiss" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It's part of the soundtrack for the game, which was curated by Pharrell Williams.

It looks like a game that has always prided itself on presentation is getting a major shot in the arm.

It's unclear what capacity Shaq and Ernie will be used in the game, but it seems fair to speculate that the two may be part of a new and improved halftime show.

We've got our fingers crossed for a pregame and postgame show. While we're wishing, a weekly wrap-up show would be awesome as well.

The actual gameplay in the video shows off several of the over 5,000 new animations and some of the NBA's relocated superstars with their new teams. That includes the first virtual glimpse of LeBron James rocking the No. 23 Cleveland Cavaliers jersey and Pau Gasol with the Chicago Bulls.

Derrick Rose is on display and a much-improved render of Los Angeles Clippers star Chris Paul is another highlight.

There's mounds to pick out in a trailer like this. These videos are designed to give fans a sneak peek at the game, and to whet your appetite for the full retail release.

Mission accomplished.

NBA 2K15 releases for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC on Oct. 7.

Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Blue Ivy Dances at the Beyonce Concert Opps The VMAS

Like mother, like daughter!

Blue Ivy couldn't contain her excitement while watching her famous mama perform her heart out at tonight's 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.

Beyoncé sang her entire album live shortly before accepting the coveted Video Vanguard Award, and even her own daughter knew she absolutely, positively killed it on stage.
Baby blue was seated in Jay Z's lap in the front row while she watched Queen Bey shake her bootyliciousness for the audience.

During "Drunk In Love" little Blue was seen dancing and singing along—and dare we say it…even giving a bit of a "Single Ladies" hand wave!

Bey and Jay's baby girl already has moves like mama!
Beyoncé got emotional during her acceptance speech, saying that she "felt full" from all of the support from her fans and family.
At one point, Jay called Bey the "greatest entertainer" in the world, while Blue got on the mic and said, "Yay, mommy!"

And while Bey most definitely stole the show tonight, it's safe to say that she may have been overshadowed by the adorable toddler.

Nick Cannon & Mariah Carey getting a Divorce (Another One Bites The Dust)

Mariah Carey
and Nick Cannon separated back in May -- and are living apart ... and we're told divorce lawyers have been negotiating a property settlement and custody agreement for months and the divorce is "a done deal."

Sources connected with the couple tell TMZ ... Mariah and Nick have been living in separate houses in NYC since May. He sees the kids but that's the extent of their contact.

Our sources say  ... Nick's appearance on Big Boy's radio show in March was the beginning of the end. Nick played Big Boy's game -- name the 5 celebs you've slept with. Nick named 5, but our sources say the one that made Mariah insane was Kim Kardashian.

We're told Mariah tore into Nick for weeks ... feeling humiliated and the relationship never recovered.

We're told it went from bad to worse when Nick went on Howard Stern and talked about Mariah not giving it up before they got hitched. She went nuclear.

Our sources say Mariah feels Nick has abandoned her by taking every gig that's on the table ... when they don't need the money. She's especially angry because it keeps him away from their kids.

For Nick's part ... we're told he feels Mariah has become impossible because she surrounds herself with "yes men."  He says she can't handle it when he dares to disagree with her.

We're also told Nick is incredulous Mariah is bitching about his work ethic ... he says he's generated $75 million since 2011 for the family.

World News: Ukraine Warns About Economic Fallout of Crisis as Fighting Rages

MOSCOW—Heavy fighting in Ukraine's east is causing long-term damage to the economy, the country's prime minister warned Wednesday, as Kiev pressed its attacks on several cities held by pro-Russian rebels.

Local officials in the eastern region of Donetsk said 34 civilians were killed and 29 wounded in the past day. Col. Andriy Lysenko, a government defense spokesman, said nine Ukrainian servicemen died and 22 others were wounded.

After days of fierce battle, the Ukrainian army retook control of the town of Ilovaisk, which had served as an important route for the rebels to reinforce their positions in the regional capital, said Col. Lysenko. He attributed the seizure of Ilovaisk to a new strategy called for by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to trap the rebels and cut them off.

Rather than just shrinking the territory controlled by rebels, the military is trying to break it into isolated islands. Rebel leaders said their men were battling for control of the town, and Col. Lysenko said troops were still clearing out separatist gunmen.

s the fighting raged on, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk warned that restoring infrastructure in eastern Ukraine could cost billions of dollars, while the conflict was hamstringing much-needed economic overhauls.

Ukraine is "losing economic potential by the day," said Mr. Yatsenyuk, an economist who threatened to quit last month over the slow pace of reform.

Mr. Yatsenyuk accused the separatists of deliberately targeting infrastructure, such as mines, power plants and railways. "It is clear that this is an planned action to strangle us economically," he told a government meeting Wednesday.

Russia has denied Western allegations it is sending fighters and weapons to reinforce insurgents. Rebels blame Kiev for much of the shelling that has severely damaged scores of cities across Ukraine's industrial east.

Underscoring the country's need for funds, Finance Minister Oleksandr Shlapak called for the International Monetary Fund to advance the last of three credit installments totaling $3.6 billion that Kiev is expecting to receive this year. Mr. Yatsenyuk said he expects the IMF's board of directors to decide on a $1.4 billion tranche on Aug. 29.

The IMF has demanded that Kiev cut spending, increase the price of gas for households and refrain from intervening to support the value of its currency, the hryvnia. But the government has been diverting funds to the military operation in the east, and Mr. Yatsenyuk said the conflict is hampering planned overhauls. The economy is expected to contract 6.5% this year, according to the IMF. The hryvnia has hit record lows in recent weeks, with $1 now buying more than 13 hryvnia.

"Unless the security situation stabilizes, it seems likely that further hryvnia weakness lies ahead. And a weaker currency just adds to the government's problems, likely boosting inflation, deepening the recession, and causing more pressure on banks, and public finances," said Timothy Ash, an analyst at Standard Bank.

In a renewed diplomatic push to end the four-month conflict, Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet Mr. Poroshenko and senior European Union officials on Tuesday. Ukrainian and Western officials say they are hopeful of progress. Col. Lysenko said Ukraine was hoping to see progress on Mr. Poroshenko's "peace plan," which calls for the insurgents to put down their weapons in return for greater autonomy. "No one needs war," he said.

The rebels have rejected calls to give up their arms and demand independence from Kiev. And Ukrainian politicians and voters have been skeptical of a truce now, arguing it could give the rebels a chance to consolidate control over some territory and give Russia long-term influence.

Meanwhile, a convoy of trucks bearing what Russia says is humanitarian aid remained parked in a field some 30 kilometers (20 miles) away from the Russia-Ukraine border near a Russian town that is also called Donetsk.

The trucks have been stuck there since last Thursday amid wrangling over the details of the delivery and inspections. A spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross, which is helping to coordinate the delivery, said it had sent a small group to check the road to Luhansk to see if the convoy trucks can make it there after security guarantees provided.

Sixteen convoy trucks that were moved to the border crossing point over the weekend drove into the customs check zone on the Russian side late on Wednesday.

If you've been wondering whether or not Chris Brown and Karrueche were on or off recently, today Breezy made everything crystal clear on Instagram.

After weeks of rumors swirling that the couple had broken up because ride-or-die chick Karrueche had had enough of Brown's alleged cheating ways, he stunned everyone today with his #WCW Instagram post. It wasn't so much the picture that had everyone saying, "wow," it was the caption, which read:

"@karrueche damn near 5 years and this woman still putting up with my s---. Need to have this baby and stop playing! Lol! My WCW"

If you've been looking for answers when it comes to these two, you can stop now because it's clear that he's thinking about going half on a baby and is deep in love.' And with Karruche looking like this why wouldn't he???

Drake Congratulates, Mocks Kevin Hart After Engagement

What are friends for?

When Kevin Hart finally popped the question to Eniko Parrish, his girlfriend of five years, Drake wasted no time in doing what a friend does best: Mocking him mercilessly.

Yes, Drake also gave mazels to Hart via Instagram, writing, "Very special day for one of my biggest inspirations and a true friend!!! So happy for you both!"

But it was the hashtags where the real show went down. Drake called out Hart's ridiculous shirt -- a button-down emblazoned with a black lightning bolt -- and offered his services for helping the comedian pick out an appropriate tuxedo. You know, one without a giant lightning bolt on the front.

The aforementioned hashtags: #KevWhatTheF--kAreYouWearing #PleaseLetsDiscussYourSuitForTheBigDay #TooImportantToRiskIt #PowderPinkLinen

Wait, wait -- powder pink linen? Maybe we need a third person to help Hart and Drake....

Kevin Hart gets Slap happy in New Madden Commercial

EA sports is usually pretty witty when it comes to marketing the Madden NFL games, where they routinely chirp teams who under-perform in the Super Bowl and keep fans up to date on the series. Though last year’s game was a little underwhelming, the new Madden 15 was created for next generation consoles – and gamers have high expectations now that the franchise has jumped the gap between old and new consoles. To build up hype for the new game, EA Sports has created the most bafflingly beautiful work of art we’ve seen for a sports game so far – check out the video above if you haven’t already.

Starring Dave Franco and Kevin Hart, the three-and-a-half-minute-long video quickly escalates to insanity as the chorus welcomes gamers to ‘Madden Season’, a time of year when friends’ rivalries grow to new physical and emotional levels. The commercial also stars plenty of stars like the Epic Meal Time crew, as well as NFL athletes Colin Kaepernick, LeSean McCoy, Dez Bryant, Von Miller and Damian Lillard.

The advertisement features everything from rap sections composed entire out of ‘blah’ for the lyrics, to a Lady Gaga-esque performance with dolphins and a happy bear in a suit rocking it out on the violin as it emerges from a pool. Why not? Somewhere in all of that is an advertisement for Madden NFL 15, and we’ll be damned if it didn’t work like a charm. Somehow, it all came together to a strange climax of bewildering, beautiful advertising.

Madden 15 is getting its own Xbox One bundle, which will net gamers a Kinect-free console, a digital download of the game itself, and three Madden NFL Ultimate Team Pro Packs. With Madden Season quickly approaching, the console bundle comes in at $399 and is a great deal for fans who are still on the fence about which console to buy. Of course, the game will release concurrently on PS4 and PS3 as well – though there’s currently no console bundles announced on that platform.

What do you think about the commercial, Ranters? Would you rather see more gameplay, or was it as good for you as it was for us?

Madden 15 is scheduled for an August 26th release in North America, and an August 29th release in Europe.

J.Cole's response to The Mike Brown shooting

"I'm tired of being desensitized to the murder of black men," rapper J. Cole said in a statement on the Dreamvillain website with the release of his surprise new song "Be Free." "I don't give a fuck if it's by police or peers. This shit is not normal."

"Be Free" is Cole's response to the police shooting of an unarmed African-American teenager, Michael Brown, in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri. The shooting has sparked widespread discussion over police authority and racial profiling as well as protests around the country, including rallies in Detroit, Nashville, New York and Chicago, among other places. Cole recorded the piano ballad, with lyrics like "All we wanna do is break the chains off/ All we wanna do is be free" – and samples of a news report about the police shooting – after identifying with Brown' story.

"There was a time in my life when I gave a fuck," Cole said in the statement. "Every chance I got I was screaming about it. I was younger. It's so easy to try to save the world when you're in college. You got nothing but time and no responsibility. But soon life hits you. No more dorms, no more meal plan, no more refund check. Nigga need a job. Nigga got rent. Got car note. Cable bill. Girlfriend moves in and becomes wife. Baby on the way. Career advances. Instagram is poppin. Lebron leaves Miami. LIFE HITS. We become distracted. We become numb. I became numb. But not anymore. That coulda been me, easily. It could have been my best friend.... I made a song. This is how we feel."

In a statement on the song's SoundCloud, Cole dedicated the song to "every young black man murdered in America," regardless of the race of the person who killed them. "I pray that one day the world will be filled with peace and rid of injustice," he wrote. "Only then will we all Be Free."

Earlier this week, rapper Killer Mike wrote a powerful essay on Instagram calling for people to consider a photo of Brown's grieving parents. "No matter how u felt about black people look at this mother and look at this father and tell me as a human being how u cannot feel empathy for them," he wrote. "How can u not feel sympathy for their pain and loss."

Carmelo gets 62 million upfront...and also loses weight

MELO

After signing a five-year, $124-million deal to remain with the New York Knicks, forward Carmelo Anthony let everyone know that the deal was about winning, and that he didn't "care about the money."

Not caring about money is the kind of thing that comes easily when you're making nine figures, and even easier when you get half of it in one sitting.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Anthony will reportedly receive an advance payment of more than $62 million, the maximum he is allowed under league rules.

Melo has cashed in it seems but he is also working hard for his pay day. In recent reports like Lebron James Carmelo Anthony has lost a significant amount of weight but why?

Carmelo Anthony has dropped a lot of weight because he thinks it'll help him in the triangle offense, and New York Knicks president Phil Jackson sees him as a small forward rather than a power forward, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post.

According to an Anthony confidant, Anthony has done so in order to resemble his physique as a rookie with the Nuggets and to be more viable in Phil Jackson's triangle offense.

...
"He wants to be as athletic as he was when he was a rookie," the confidant told the Post. "Plus he wants to be a facilitator in the triangle and speed will help that."

...
Orlando Magic forward Tobias Harris, a Long Island product, worked out three times with Anthony in June at the Terminal 23 gym Anthony owns in midtown. Harris noticed a major difference in his appearance. "He looked real good," Harris told the Post recently.

According to a source, the Harris camp was told Anthony was working out three times a day, doing basketball drills, agility drills, weights and yoga.

Anthony has also reportedly, like LeBron James, essentially cut carbs out of his diet this summer. It all appears to be working.

We'll reserve judgment on this until we actually see Anthony and the Knicks running the triangle, but the switch to small forward is questionable. All evidence from the past couple of years points to Anthony as a much more effective power forward, stretching the floor and creating a massive matchup problem, even if he always saw himself as more of a wing player.

There's an argument, though, that staying skinnier will be best for the longevity of his career. Some think pretty much all players should save themselves some wear and tear that way, especially as they get older. It's not easy to bulk up during the season, so here's hoping he has calculated this decision correctly.

So Bad It's Good:Peyton & Eli Manning are rapping again..."Football Fantasy"

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Just when you got "Football on Your Phone" out of your head, the rapping Manning brothers have a catchy new tune.

A year after making their rap debut, Peyton and Eli Manning are back rapping in a new commercial, DirecTV's "Fantasy Football Fantasy."

Gone are the wigs the quarterbacks wore in their rap debut that mimicked hairstyles of the 60s and 70s. Now, they're decked out in modern-day duds, Peyton starts out in a white T-shirt and Eli in gray with a straight-brimmed baseball cap, then both of them sport black and white suits, Peyton with a long tie, Eli with a bow tie.

The three-minute rap video starts with Eli asking his brother if he's watching some football.
A fog machine kicks in shortly thereafter along with the scantily clad dancers.

"Back at 'em," Eli says.

Their fantasy includes an "end zone that ends in a waterfall," and "a shower that showers you with tiny footballs." And it finishes with Eli auto-tuning in outer space with a winged horse and his dad, Archie.

Also making cameo appearances are Joe Namath and Chris Johnson along with three of Peyton Manning's offensive linemen in Denver: Orlando Franklin, Ryan Clady and Louis Vasquez.

The Broncos begin their stretches every day with music blaring from a loud speaker at their Dove Valley complex, and of course Monday it started with "Fantasy Football Fantasy," which led to some razzing and some mixed reviews after practice.

"Oh, this one's way better, I think," Broncos cornerback Chris Harris said. "Just the song is better. But I think the last commercial was funnier."

"It's funny," wide receiver Demaryius Thomas said. "I was looking forward to another one since the one last year."

Rookie returner Isaiah Burse suggested his QB should stick to his day job, though, giving this review: "Not a Hall of Fame actor but definitely a Hall of Fame quarterback."

Cornerback Rahim Moore called his quarterback multitalented.

"He's got a little skills in his raps," Moore said.

As for a music career, "the sky's the limit for him," Moore said. "After football, he might be a head coach, who knows? His future's so bright. You never know, he might be a president."

Drake Makes Recruiting Pitch to Kevin Durant During Toronto Concert

The Toronto Raptors may have a hard time landing the biggest free agents, but with the help of an ambassador named Drake, they may have a better chance moving forward.

As evidenced by the video below, Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant attended a recent Drake concert in Toronto. With the 2013-14 NBA MVP present, the rapper made a pitch to Durant—with the help of the crowd—to sign with the Raptors when he becomes a free agent in the summer of 2016.

Update: August 11 at 1:28 p.m. ET
It looks like the Raptors ambassador crossed the line at the concert:

Actor Robin Williams dead at 63...R.I.P

Beloved actor Robin Williams died at the age of 63 on Monday, authorities and his wife have confirmed.

Police were the first to announce the death of Williams, who was discovered “unconscious and not breathing inside his residence” in Tiburon, California. A police report was the original source of the announcement.

“The Sheriff’s Office Coroner Divison suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia,” the report stated.

Williams wife Susan Schneider issued a statement shortly after police released theirs. “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human begins. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

Said his publicist in a separate statement today, “He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss.”

An investigation into his death is now underway.

In July the actor had checked himself into rehab after troubles with alcohol. A statement from his rep to TMZ at the time said, “After working back-to-back projects, Robin is simply taking the opportunity to fine-tune and focus on his continued commitment, of which he remains extremely proud.”

Williams is best known for roles in Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society, Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Jumanji.

More recently, the actor starred on CBS’ The Crazy Ones.

Mike Brown Shooting: Anonymous Hackers Threaten Police, Promise To Shut Down Government Websites [VIDEO]

Anonymous, the Internet hacking collective, posted a video warning to the Ferguson, Missouri, police, admonishing them for fatally shooting Mike Brown, an unarmed African American teenager, and swearing revenge if any protesters demonstrating against the police are harmed. The group, which has adopted the Guy Fawkes mask as its symbol and frequently becomes involved in contentious legal matters, said in the video late Sunday Brown’s death Saturday is just the latest example of police misconduct having deadly consequences.

Brown, a graduate of St. Louis’ Normandy High School, was killed after a run-in with police and, while few details are known, a disturbing picture of the young man lying face down on the street has helped incite a wave of Internet action.

“The entire global collective of Anonymous is outraged at this cold blooded murder of a young teen. Not a week goes by that some young person, usually of minority ethnicity -- is slaughtered by murderous police in the USA,” a disguised voice said in the video, which can be found below.

“For this reason Anonymous will not be satisfied this time, as we have in the past -- with simply obtaining justice for this young man and his family. Anonymous demands that the congressional representatives and senators from Missouri introduce legislation entitled ‘Mike Brown’s Law’ that will set strict national standards for police conduct in the USA. We further demand that this new law include specific language to grant the victims of police violence the same rights and prerogatives that are already enjoyed nationwide by the victims of other violent criminals.”

Of the few details police have released about the shooting perhaps the most explosive has been the explanation that Brown was shot because he reached for an officer’s gun. Brown’s death, and the notion he was somehow to blame, has infuriated the mostly black community and led to protests Sunday, culminating in a riot and 32 arrests. Anonymous, in the same video and the Pastebin message that accompanied it, threatened the police with consequences if any demonstrators are harmed.

“If you abuse, harass or harm in any way the protesters in Ferguson we will take every Web-based asset of your departments and governments offline. That is not a threat. It is a promise,” the message went on. “We will dox and release the personal information on every single member of the Ferguson Police Department, as well as any other jurisdiction that participates in the abuse. We will seize all your databases and email spools and dump them on the Internet.”

An Anonymous-launched Twitter feed dubbed @OpFerguson surfaced Sunday, with Twitter conversations quickly gaining steam under the hashtags #MikeBrown, #Anonymous, #OpFerguson and #AnonCorpWatch.

Grief and Protests Follow Shooting of a Teenager

The fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager Saturday by a police officer in a St. Louis suburb came after a struggle for the officer’s gun, police officials said Sunday, in an explanation that met with outrage and skepticism in the largely African-American community.

The killing of the youth, Michael Brown, 18, ignited protests on Saturday and Sunday in Ferguson, Mo., a working-class suburb of about 20,000 residents. Hundreds of people gathered at the scene of the shooting to question the police and to light candles for Mr. Brown, who was planning to begin college classes on Monday.

Mr. Brown’s stepfather, Louis Head, held a cardboard sign that said, “Ferguson police just executed my unarmed son.

At a news conference on Sunday morning, the St. Louis County police chief, Jon Belmar, said that a man had been shot and killed after he had assaulted a police officer and the two had struggled over the officer’s gun inside his patrol car. At least one shot was fired from inside the car, Chief Belmar said.

“The genesis of this was a physical confrontation,” Chief Belmar told reporters.

But elected officials and advocacy groups called for a full investigation and questioned the tactics of the police, who acknowledged that Mr. Brown had been unarmed. Antonio French, a city councilman in St. Louis, was at the scene of the protests on Sunday and said in an interview that more than 100 people had gathered, most of them silently standing in groups, some leaving behind teddy bears and balloons to memorialize Mr. Brown.

Mr. French said he was unsatisfied with the police department’s explanation of the shooting.

“I find it hard to believe,” he said, adding that he was disappointed with the police response in the aftermath of the shooting, which further distressed Ferguson residents and members of Mr. Brown’s family.

“It’s a textbook example of how not to handle the situation,” Mr. French said. “Ferguson has a white government and a white mayor, but a large black population. This situation has brought out whatever rifts were between that minority community and the Ferguson government.”

Esther Haywood, the president of the N.A.A.C.P. in St. Louis County, said in a statement: “We are hurt to hear that yet another teenaged boy has been slaughtered by law enforcement, especially in light of the recent death of Eric Garner in New York, who was killed for allegadly selling cigarettes. We plan to do everything within our power to ensure that the Ferguson Police Department as well as the St. Louis County Police Department releases all details pertinent to the shooting. We strongly encourage residents to stay away from the crime scene so that no additional citizens are injured.”

The police on Sunday said they were still trying to sort out the exact details, but they released what they said was the fullest account of the shooting that they could provide. Just after noon on Saturday, the police said, an officer in a patrol car approached Mr. Brown and another man. As the officer began to leave his vehicle, one of the men pushed the officer back into the car and “physically assaulted” him, according to the police department’s account.

A struggle occurred “over the officer’s weapon,” and at least one shot was fired inside the car, Chief Belmar said. The two left the car, and the officer shot Mr. Brown about 35 feet away from the vehicle, the police reported. Several shots were fired from the officer’s weapon.

The medical examiner for St. Louis County is investigating to determine how many times Mr. Brown was shot, the police said.

Chief Belmar said that the Ferguson police chief, Thomas Jackson, had called him personally and asked that his department to look into the shooting because Chief Jackson wanted an independent investigation. Chief Belmar said that the St. Louis County prosecuting attorney would determine whether the shooting was justified or charges should be filed.

As Chief Belmar spoke at a televised news conference, chants of “Don’t shoot!” and “We want answers!” could be heard from the protesters who had gathered outside the Ferguson police headquarters.

At a candlelight vigil on Sunday evening, the heightened tensions between the police and the African-American community were on display. A crowd estimated in the thousands flooded the streets near the scene of the shooting, some of them chanting “No justice, no peace.” They were met by hundreds of police officers in riot gear, carrying rifles and shields, as well as K-9 units.

Witnesses described a peaceful protest that later turned volatile, and there were scattered reports of violence. Images and videos captured on cellphones and posted on social media sites appeared to show people spray-painting and looting a QuikTrip gas station and other stores. Rioters shattered the windows of the gas station and damaged several police cars, said Brian Lewis, a spokesman for the St. Louis County Police Department.

It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured or arrested during the protests. County officials did not return calls and messages seeking comment.

Community and civic leaders pleaded for calm and to allow the investigation to run its course.

“We have to do this in a constructive manner,” Mayor James Knowles III of Ferguson said in an interview with a local Fox television station.

The officer who shot Mr. Brown has been on the force about six years and will be interviewed extensively by detectives on Sunday, the police said. They did not identify the officer involved by either name or rank.

“Any other details, including the reason as to why the encounter occurred and the initial struggle ensued, are still a part of the continuing investigation,” the police said in a statement.

Family members of Mr. Brown said that he had been walking to his grandmother’s house when the shooting occurred. His body remained in the street for some time, guarded by the police, while neighbors gathered in the area.

Police officials, fearing civil disorder, dispatched officers with police dogs to control the crowds. In response, some Twitter users posted pictures of the dogs at the Ferguson gathering on Saturday next to photos of police dogs used to control African-American crowds during the Jim Crow era.

Mr. Brown had just graduated from high school and was planning to attend Vatterott College, his mother, Lesley McSpadden, told reporters. His family has retained Benjamin Crump, the lawyer who represented Trayvon Martin’s relatives.

“You took my son away from me,” she told the television news station KMOV. “Do you know how hard it was for me to get him to stay in school and graduate? You know how many black men graduate? Not many. Because you bring them down to this type of level, where they feel like they don’t got nothing to live for anyway. ‘They’re going to try to take me out anyway.’ ”
