New Kendrick Lamar Single "I Love Myself"
Kendrick Lamar has just launched his first single since 2012. Entitled i, the track follows in the footsteps of The Beastie Boys and Charles Hamilton, and samples That Lady by the Isley Brothers.
His first official single since Good Kid Maad City, i, premiered on US radio station Power 106, sounds like a mainstream hit record; a triumphant anthem featuring a grand introduction and the refrain “I love myself”, the Rahki-produced track begins with the bare bones of the famous 1973 soul hit, before using its frenzied riff in the chorus, and descending eventually into a rush of car horns and a wonky jazz breakdown, most of which cowers under the inimitable force of Lamar’s words.
Although Lamar has yet to confirm his new album’s release, he told Rolling Stone recently that it wouldn’t feature an abundance of cameos from other artists. “I have so much to say,” he said. “It’s almost selfish of me.”
Nominated for Best International Act at this year’s MOBO awards, the prolific rapper can also be heard on the new Flying Lotus, Chris Brown, Jeezy albums to name a few.
